How to Shoot and Edit a Giant Moonrise Behind a Landmark

Getting the moon to rise behind a specific building means planning for a moment that lasts only a few minutes, then shooting it in fading light with a very long lens. Even with the time and direction worked out ahead, you can still find yourself in the wrong spot when it finally breaks the horizon. [Read More]

4 Questions to Ask Before You Choose a Lens

Most people learn lenses as a set of assignments: wide angle for landscapes, telephoto for portraits, a 50mm for everything in between. Those assignments are easy to memorize, and they quietly limit how many different photographs you can pull out of a single scene. [Read More]

The Fake Photo That Helped Sink a U.S. Senator

In the last stretch of the 1950 Maryland Senate race, roughly 300,000 copies of a four-page tabloid called From the Record went out across the state, and inside was a picture of Senator Millard Tydings standing close beside Earl Browder, the former head of the American Communist Party. The two men had never posed together, and the caption underneath called the picture a composite. Tydings lost by more than 43,000 votes. [Read More]

Viltrox 35mm f/1.4 Pro Review: A Beautiful Behemoth

Viltrox has made huge waves in the world of optics, with many saying that it is the Sigma of China. Of course, this is a huge compliment given that Sigma is now famous for making affordable optics that easily compete with OEM lenses. I've reviewed many Viltrox lenses now, and I always enjoy the process. They are solid lenses, with ambitious optical goals, and they usually meet these lofty expectations. [Read More]

You Don't Need a Fast Lens to Blur the Background

Aperture, shutter speed, and ISO are the first three settings anyone learns, and each comes with rules repeated so often they start to sound like law. Knowing which of those rules hold up, and when breaking them gets you a better frame, decides whether the camera works with you or against you. [Read More]

Is the $1,900 Canon EOS R8 Mark II Worth It Over the Original?

The Canon EOS R8 Mark II sells for $1,899, which puts it $250 above the original R8 and $400 below the larger EOS R6 Mark II. That narrow spread makes choosing between Canon's compact full frame bodies harder than it has been in years, especially if one camera has to handle both your stills and your video. [Read More]

What Separates a Natural Wildlife Edit From an Overcooked One

Wildlife files need more editing than most genres because they come from long lenses at high ISOs, subjects that won't pose, and backgrounds you couldn't choose. The edits that rescue those frames, such as cropping, noise reduction, and masked brightening, are the same ones that most often push a photo past the point where it looks natural. [Read More]

He Shot an Iconic Photo—and Lost the Copyright

Lester LaRue shot 44 frames on the morning of April 19, 1995, with his employer's camera, his employer's film, and his employer's car to get him there. One of those frames ran on the cover of Newsweek's May 1 issue. A federal court later ruled the copyrights had never been his. [Read More]

iPhone Duo Review: One Week Later

It's been a week since the iPhone Duo was released, and MacRumors videographer Dan Barbera wanted to revisit his review since he's been able to use the Duo for a longer stretch of time. Subscribe to the MacRumors YouTube channel for more videos. You've probably seen images of iPhone Duos with a bright white line running across one side of the inner display. There is a defect affecting some users, but Apple says it's a problem limited to a small number of units. None of us at MacRumors have had a display crack, and we've seen some AI photos floating around, so it's hard to tell just how many people are actually having problems. iPhone Duos with the hinge issue that causes the display to crack seem to get damaged shortly after purchase, so if you've had an ‌iPhone Duo‌ for the last week and it's still fine, it's not likely to have this defect. The outer display is small, but Dan finds it useful for checking notifications, replying to messages, and scrolling through apps and websites. He unfolds it for multitasking or longer messages, and is a fan of using the ‌iPhone Duo‌ unfolded in portrait mode for watching videos and using an app at the same time. He finds the Touch ID fingerprint sensor easy to find, and says Apple Watch unlock is similar to Face ID. The cameras are just okay, and someone who zooms in a lot is probably going to miss having a telephoto lens. Battery life is between an iPhone 18 Pro and a Pro Max, and for most people, it's likely going to last a full day. Not all apps have been updated for the Duo layout yet, but it's getting better. There's an extension called Wider that extends the Safari window to the edges of the ‌iPhone Duo‌'s outer display, and it's a big improvement. We may see other accommodations in the coming months as developers and users get used to the new layout. Dan says the ‌iPhone Duo‌ is the most excited he's been about an iPhone in a long time, and he plans to keep using it even though he misses having a telephoto lens. Did you get an ‌iPhone Duo‌? What do you think now that you're a week into using it? Let us know in the comments below.Related Roundup: iPhone DuoBuyer's Guide: iPhone Duo (Buy Now)Related Forum: iPhoneThis article, "iPhone Duo Review: One Week Later" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

How to Get Good Photos When the Light Is Bad

Most advice about natural light boils down to two instructions: shoot at golden hour and avoid midday. Both hold some truth, yet most of your shooting happens in the hours between, and knowing what the sun is doing at each stage decides whether a frame has depth or falls flat. [Read More]

Rian Johnson's iPhone Camera App Goes Viral

Filmmaker Rian Johnson, best known for writing and directing "Knives Out," "Glass Onion," and "Star Wars: The Last Jedi," has seen his new iPhone photography app Chromagraph Camera climb to the top of the paid App Store charts after attracting attention on social media this week. Johnson developed the app with his longtime cinematographer Steve Yedlin and programmer Eric Cameron, bringing image processing techniques from their films to iPhone still photography. Chromagraph currently ranks No. 1 in Photo & Video on the U.S. App Store. Johnson's announcement on X accumulated six million views within a day, while users have been sharing their results, with some photo posts attracting thousands of likes. Chromagraph shoots RAW photos and processes them using techniques Yedlin developed for his films, giving pictures a distinctive treatment of color, contrast, and grain. It also adds halation, a soft glow around bright areas. Users can adjust the look with controls for color, tone, and texture. The effect appears after taking a photo, when users open the app's gallery. Original RAW files are kept intact, so edits can be changed later. For sharing, photographs can be exported as JPEG or HEIC files with the processing applied. An automatic export option also sends each finished photo to the user's photo library. Chromagraph Camera costs $12.99 as a one-time purchase on the App Store and requires iOS 17 or later. This article, "Rian Johnson's iPhone Camera App Goes Viral" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums
